What could our future selves tell us about the development of future Berlin 2038 in terms of climate adaptation and public spaces? Which technical and social developments took place? And how was it achieved? BOING! Or which 5 things can you think of that you would like to hand over to an artificial intelligence? BOING!

Using improvisational theatre techniques, we approached two topics playfully and reflectively in the TransImpro workshops of #Berlinforschtmit: “Climate Change and Public Space” as well as “Artificial Intelligence and Society”. Through narrative techniques, association exercises, and trying out new roles, scientists from the Berlin University Alliance and practitioners from Berlin exchanged their perspectives. Together, they defined the topics and uncovered which fields of action the experts view as necessary for Berlin. With lots of fun, passion, professional expertise, and a large portion of courage to try themselves out in improvisation, the foundations were laid for the development of a transdisciplinary project.

We thank Luise Grell and Aldo Spahiu for their support in the conception and implementation of the TransImpro workshops.

TANSIMPRO-WORKSHOP CLIMATE CHANGE AND PUBLIC SPACE

Berlin needs to adopt to climate change, to avoid floodings during heavy rainfalls or to provide cool spots for humans during periods of high temperatures above 35 °C. This will require changes in the city. For example, streets could be partially unsealed or grey water from buildings could be used to irrigate street trees. Sponge city, blue-grey infrastructures, mobility transition are key terms which were being discussed during the TransImpro-workshop “Climate Change and Public Space” on 5. June 2023. How can spaces created through urban redevelopment be used by all residents of the city? How can public spaces be a role model for private spaces? Which best-practice-examples already exist and what can we learned from them?

TRANSIMPRO-WORKSHOP ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND SOCIETY

Berlin is considered to be a centre for artificial intelligence. Start-ups and important research institutions that are driving the development of technologies with artificial intelligence are located here. There are lots of dynamics. At the same time, artificial intelligence is a Bohemian village for most Berliners, the Berlin administration is struggling with digitalisation in general, and educational institutions and teachers receive little guidance on what should be taught regarding this topic. In the TransImpro-workshop "Artificial Intelligence and Society" on 21 June 2023, the participants agreed: Artificial Intelligence will change our society. However, society should not be driven by technological developments. How can visions of the future regarding artificial intelligence in Berlin be developed positively with Berliners? What opportunities does artificial intelligence offer for everyday life? Do we need a driving licence for artificial intelligence?
