What do you think should be researched?

Research for Berlin

#Berlinforschtmit – the TD-Lab of the Berlin University Alliance has collected nearly 1000 questions, themes, and ideas for new research. What kind of research is needed to make berlin future-proof? What knowledges do we need, to make everyday life in the neighbourhood easier? #Berlinforschtmit is still collecting your question for new research, digitally and on-site.

And what happens with your questions? Together with scientists and practical experts we explored two topics in depth together in Transimpro the topics “climate change and public space” as well as “Artificial Intelligence” were two of the main topics of the questions submitted by Berliners. In TransImpro workshops with scientists from the Berlin University Alliance and practitioners from Berlin, we identified which aspects should definitely be researched for Berlin. During TransImpro-Workshops we employ techniques of improvisational theatre and test new methods within transdisciplinary. Together with the workshop groups and other interested people #Berlinforschtmit will work towards a research proposal.

LOOPS SESSIONS: Michelle-Marie Letelier

For this LOOPS SESSION we are joined by Michelle-Marie Letelier, an artist and researcher based in Berlin, who will introduce us to her practice. There will be a screening of the work "The Bone", both on screen and in VR, an interactive experience in virtual reality inside the skull of a wild salmon, addressing ethical and ecological issues related to salmon farming, domestication and coexistence with this species, from a non-anthropocentric, eco-philosophical and indigenous perspective.

Her multimedia installations, photographs, videos, drawings and objects embrace orchestrated transformations of natural resources, alongside extensive wide-ranging, interdisciplinary research into the landscapes where their exploitation and speculation take place. Through her work, she places together different epochs, regions and societies, examining political-economic, historical and cultural aspects.

Her work has been shown internationally in biennials, galleries, museums and institutions, among others: KBH.G (Basel); Tabakalera (San Sebastián); OrGallery (Vancouver); Kunstmuseum Bonn; Villa Romana (Florence); Stanislavsky Electrotheatre (Moscow); Gropius-Bau (Berlin) and many more.

The event takes place in our studio + livestream and is open to all.

LOOPS with John-Dylan Haynes, AA Cavia & Marie-Luise Angerer

The increasing incorporation of machine learning in neuroscience research as well as the use of the human brain as metaphor in current and historical conceptions of artificial intelligence, bring up the need for a (re)negotiation of intelligence, mind and brain, and consciousness. AA Cavia (Computer Scientist, Philosophy of Computation, Author of ‘Logiciel’), Prof. Dr. John-Dylan Haynes (Professor of Neuroscience, Director of BCAN, Charité) and Prof. Dr. Marie-Luise Angerer (Professor of Media Theory, University of Potsdam, Author of ‘Nonconscious’) will approach this negotiation from their specific perspectives, converging in a shared discussion.

The event takes place in our studio at TU Berlin and is also live-streamed.

Start: 7 p.m.

Where?: Studio von New Practice in Art and Technology; Hauptgebäude der Technischen Universität Berlin, Straße des 17. Juni 135, Alter Lesesaal, Raum H3021

LOOPS SESSIONS: Agnes Meyer-Brandis

For this LOOPS SESSION, we are joined by Agnes Meyer-Brandis, a Berlin based artist with a background in sculpture and new media, who will introduce us to her practice. She creates works on the fringes of science, fiction and fabulation. Educated first in mineralogy, followed by studies at the art academies in Maastricht, Düsseldorf and Cologne, she has founded the Research Raft, a fictitious Institute for Art & Subjective Science that purposefully ‘is asking questions but gives no answers’ in fields such as climate research, environmental studies, meteorology, as well as synthetic and artistic biology.

Meyer-Brandis’ work has been exhibited worldwide and awarded with many prizes, including two Prix Ars Electronica Awards of Distinction & the European Kairos prize.

LOOPS SESSION: Alison Sperling, Emiliano Guaraldo & Marco Malvestio

As planetary modeling and visualization techniques advance, their effects extend beyond scientific knowledge production pervading the social and cultural domains of life. Alison Sperling (Assistant Professor at Florida State University), Marco Malvestio ( Assistant Professor at University of Padua) and Emiliano Guaraldo (Postdoctoral Researcher at Ca' Foscari University Venice) joins us for a discussion on the critical significance of data extraction and scenario making as they shape social perceptions of the planet’s futures and humanity’s presence, or absence, within them. This process becomes particularly relevant in light of the Anthropocene paradigm and the many narratives challenging, expanding, and recentering this proposed “epoch of man”.

LOOPS SESSION: Milagros Miceli & Sana Ahmad

Artificial Intelligence and Platforms rely heavily on a system of global extraction and the exploitation of data workers. Dr. Milagros Miceli (Research Lead at Weizenbaum , DAIR Researcher) & Dr. Sana Ahmad (Researcher at Helmut Schmidt University) join us to discuss the power asymmetries and labor conditions of hidden and precarized data workers, often swept under the rug in the promotion of "Ethical AI" by multinational tech companies. They will share their individual research and perspectives on the labor conditions of data labelling and content moderation towards an understanding of Ethical AI that puts workers and their organisation first.

LOOPS SESSIONS: Kennedy + Swan

We are joined for this LOOPS SESSION by kennedy+swan (founded in 2013), comprising of the work of the two artists Bianca Kennedy and Swan Collective. When working together, they explore the future of evolution and its impact on plants, animals, and humans. These utopias are liberated from human supremacy, illuminating the ecological benefits of hybrid life forms, and addressing the twisted relationship between humans and machines. For their videos, VR and AR installations, the duo employs a variety of animation techniques: drawings, stereoscopic film footage, 3D-scanned landscapes, and self-built characters create a dense network of analog and digital imagery. Recent works utilize and reflect the rise of Artificial Intelligence by integrating AI-generated texts and images into their animations.

kennedy+swan exhibit internationally in galleries, museums, and festivals. Exhibitions include the Lyon Biennial, Gropius Bau Berlin, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig, Bärenzwinger Berlin, CCBB Rio de Janeiro, Loop Discover Award and Sundance Film Festival. They live in Berlin.
